What is a potential complication of ductal ectasia?

Ductal ectasia is a condition characterized by the dilation of the ducts beneath the nipple, which can lead to a buildup of fluid and thickened ductal epithelium. One of the potential complications associated with ductal ectasia is the development of a breast abscess. This occurs when stagnant fluid in the ducts becomes infected, leading to the formation of pus-filled pockets.

Breast abscesses can present with localized pain, swelling, redness, and sometimes systemic symptoms such as fever. The underlying process in ductal ectasia, where the ducts are obstructed and potentially infected, creates an environment conducive to abscess formation.

While other conditions like fibrocystic changes, Paget's carcinoma, and mastitis may be associated with breast health issues, they do not arise directly as complications of ductal ectasia in the same direct manner as breast abscesses do.
